"L'Ordre et la Morale" interdit en Nouvelle Calédonie
Jusqu'à présent, les habitants de Nouvelle Calédonie ne peuvent regarder ce film qui met pourtant en scène une partie très importante de leur histoire. Le seul distributeur local a annoncé fin octobre 2011 la suspension de l'exhibition, de crainte d'"attiser les rancœurs". Alors que Mathieu Kassovitz est persuadé qu'il s'agit de "pressions politiques", Douglas Hickson, propriétaire de l'entreprise locale Cinécity, a justifié la suspension du film en raison de son ton "caricatural", "qui rouvre des plaies qui s'étaient cicatrisées".
Respecter la "coutume"
Pour le peuple Kanak de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, la parole a une valeur très importante. Les accords sont faits les yeux dans les yeux, ce qui est appelé localement la "coutume". Pour convaincre les habitants de tourner son film, Mathieu Kassovitz devait avoir l'accord de "tout le monde", sans exception. Cela a impliqué plusieurs longues séances avec une quarantaine de personnes chacune, où le réalisateur devait expliquer sa démarche, ses intentions, etc. Une vraie campagne pour défendre L'Ordre et la morale !
Une histoire controversée
Avec L'Ordre et la morale, Mathieu Kassovitz voulait offrir une autre version de l'épisode de la prise d'otages à Ouvéa, en Nouvelle-Calédonie, en 1988. Si les médias de l'époque dressaient un portrait très négatif des Kanaks, en mentionnant les décapitations et les viols, le réalisateur s'est inspiré du livre "Enquête sur Ouvéa". Celui-ci, plus impartial, constituait un "vrai scénario" d'après Kassovitz, s'appuyant autant sur la mort des gendarmes que sur les agressions subies par les Kanaks.
Toujours engagé
Très connu par le drame politique et social La Haine, en 1995, le réalisateur Mathieu Kassovitz précise que, contrairement à ce que l'on pourrait penser (Gothika, Babylon A. D.), il n'a pas abandonné les projets militants. Non seulement ses choix en tant qu'acteur portent souvent sur des films engagés (Amen, Munich), mais il travaille également sur le projet de L'Ordre et la morale depuis plus de dix ans !
Un acteur pour Legorjus
Mathieu Kassovitz a envisagé de confier le rôle central de Philippe Legorjus à plusieurs acteurs avant de décider de l'interpréter lui-même. Face aux grandes difficultés de production, le réalisateur a estimé que cette décision montrerait sa détermination, son implication dans le projet : "Cela authentifiait totalement ma démarche", confie-t-il.
Un tempérament fort
Peu habitués au rythme des tournages et au fort caractère de Mathieu Kassovitz, l'acteur débutant Iabe Lapacas et le membre du GIGN Philippe Legorjus dévoilent leurs surprises pendant la réalisation de L'Ordre et la morale. Selon Iapacas : "Jamais une mise en scène n’était déterminée à l’avance. Mathieu est un bon directeur d’acteurs, il laisse les gens prendre le temps, prendre la mesure de leur travail, surtout ses acteurs, car avec les techniciens c’est une autre paire de manches !" Pour Legorjus, "compte tenu de son tempérament et de sa manière de fonctionner, Mathieu est capable sur le plateau de réécrire toutes les scènes, de refaire un scénario in vivo !"
Tout le monde en danger
Dans L'Ordre et la morale, l'une des grandes volontés de Mathieu Kassovitz consistait à mélanger les acteurs consacrés aux habitants locaux et à de vrais militaires. Ainsi, se retrouvent sur le tournage des noms connus comme Sylvie Testud (Lourdes, Gamines) et Malik Zidi (Les Amitiés maléfiques, Mystères de Lisbonne), côte à côte avec des vrais Kanaks et d'anciens militaires directement impliqués dans l'épisode d'Ouvéa. Mathieu Kassovitz se félicite de son choix : "Cela mettait tout le monde un peu en danger..."
Une belle coïncidence
Lorsque Mathieu Kassovitz a choisi Iabe Lapacas pour jouer le rôle du Kanak Alphonse Dianou, figure historique très importante dans l'épisode de la prise d'otages, il ne savait pas qu'il se trouvait en fait devant un cousin de Dianou. Etudiant en droit à Clermont-Ferrand, le jeune originaire d'Ouvéa n'avait aucune expérience d'acteur.
Des décors en bois
Afin de rendre L'Ordre et la morale le plus réaliste possible, la production a demandé à l'armée française de lui apporter une aide logistique. Malheureusement, l'équipe a essuyé un refus. Une grande partie des hélicoptères et des véhicules militaires qui apparaissent dans le film ont donc été reconstitués... en bois !
Le plus grand défi
Après avoir été le producteur et acteur dans Métisse, La Haine et Assassin(s), Christophe Rossignon rejoint encore une fois un projet mené par Mathieu Kassovitz. D'après lui, entre le refus initial des habitants locaux et les difficultés de financement, L'Ordre et la morale a été leur projet le plus ambitieux et le plus complexe jusqu'à ce jour.
Dates et lieux de tournage
Le film a été tourné de début septembre à mi-novembre 2010, en Polynésie française et en France métropolitaine.
Budget à la française
Après avoir dirigé deux productions américaines à gros budgets (40 millions de dollars pour Gothika, avec Halle Berry ; 60 millions pour le film franco-américain Babylon A. D., avec Vin Diesel), Mathieu Kassovitz retourne aux productions à la française. L'Ordre et la morale aura coûté près de 15 millions d'euros - environ 20 millions de dollars - , une somme considérable pour un film national. Pas mal pour un cinéaste dont le film qui l'a consacré, La Haine, n'avait coûté que 3 millions d'euros...
