Résumé: Ayant découvert le jazz, comme beaucoup, avec Chet Baker (et Stan Getz), j'avais vu ce film à sa sortie et l'avais adoré. Son noir et blanc parfois charbonneux, parfois brûlé de lumière, sa fascination pour le mythe et pour le déclin d'un artiste blessé, tout dans ce film avait de quoi plaire à un jeune adulte amoureux de la mythologie du jazz. En le revoyant aujourd'hui, j'en vois plus les défauts, mais finalement il me semble résister aux critiques que je pourrais en faire. Certes, Bruce Weber, photographe connu, un peu trop fasciné par le glamour et la beauté des jeunes gens, n'était pas forcément le cinéaste idéal pour rendre compte sans affectation de la trajectoire de Chet Baker (affectation et effets particulièrement sensibles au début du film). Mais outre que seul quelqu'un comme lui a su à temps s'intéresser de près à l'individu, de façon réelle et profonde, son film capte des moments pour lesquels on ne peut que le remercier. Restant parfois à la surface, le film la dépasse finalement parce qu'il permet de cerner non seulement l'autodestruction d'une gueule d'ange trop vite arrivée et proclamée génie, mais aussi l'évolution du rapport de cet artiste à son art. L'insistance sur la drogue et sur les relations de famille, loin d'être aussi superficielle qu'on ne pourrait le craindre de prime abord, complète le portrait d'un homme en fuite perpétuelle. Alors bien sûr, on aimerait que plus de place soit consacrée à la musique de Chet, mais au bout du compte ce documentaire qui enregistre parmi ses derniers moments et arrive souvent à les mettre en perspective est un beau film sur un artiste et le portrait d'un ami trop vite parti. L'édition est en tout point remarquable: présentée sous forme de coffret-livre, elle contient bien entendu de nombreuses photos prises par Weber, ainsi que des clips, et un CD de deux titres réalisés pendant le tournage du film. Nul amateur de jazz, et au-delà de musique, ou de portrait d'artiste, ne devrait rater ce très beau témoignage de que devrait apporter plus souvent le cinéma s'il s'intéressait plus à la musique, et plus largement aux grands artistes.
